  • Did Canadians Prepare for Emergencies in 2012?

My latest blog in DeHaan Services, "Did We Ignore Vic Toews Preparing for an Emergency?" explains how I happened to notice "emergency preparedness week" in Canada.

    Do Canadians Have Emergencies?

According to my reading of the Canadian government web site (available through the red banner, and also through my article), most of our emergencies involve getting stuck while driving through blizzards, or perhaps losing power because snow or ice brought down power lines. So: yes, we do have emergencies and had better get stuff ready for the inevitable. Our Canadian government does explain how to prepare for an emergency.

In fact, checking out any such site helps us plan, so we can be prepared for an emergency.

Do I hear anyone asking "Who's Vic Toews"? My article explains a bit about him, too.

Plugging my "Emergency Preparedness" Article Elsewhere

Faithful readers here know that my Blog of Writing always includes a no-obligation writing tip, so look for it in "Canadian Emergency Preparedness Week 2012".

  • Impersonally Arranged Marriages

While a wedding arranged by family may not fit Western notions of romantic love, my "Computer Algorithm Solves Arranged Marriages via the Hall Theorem" article in Decoded Science puts "impersonal" on a pedestal.

Is an Computer-Arranged Marriage in Your Future?

Fear not. The Hall Theorem states the condition under which a set of potential brides and grooms could be matched to the ladies' specifications. So long as they choose properly, a computer could sort out all the acceptable couples.

Dating services must do something much more complex, if they actually review multiple "points of compatibility" among thousands of eager singles.

Shameless Promotion for the Hall Theorem for Arranged Marriages

As always, I also publicize my article in DeHaan Services ("Computers for Arranged Marriages"). In my Blog of Writing, "Arranging Marriages by Computer" includes a bonus writing tip.

  • Turing's Halting Problem

"Turing Machines and the Halting Problem" is my latest Decoded Science article.

Did you ever wonder why your computer "hangs"...meaning that it does not finish a task...? Couldn't someone write a program to verify that another program will actually do its job?

Alan Turing's Proof of the Impossible Halting Problem

"A Halting Problem, but Not for Turing" image by ell brown.

Famed mathematician Alan Turing addressed this problem long before electronic computers had been invented. My article explains how one program could "trick" another; this makes the Halting Problem unsolvable no matter how smart the programmer is.

Publicity for my Article about Turing's Halting Problem

As always, DeHaan Services ("Two Views of the Halting Problem") mentions this article; and in my Blog of Writing, "Preview of Turing and the Halting Problem" adds a free, no-risk writing tip.
